Transmission Flush | Change Transmission Fluid
Change Your Transmission Fluid Regularly and Don’t Forget to Flush
We worry about our car engine’s oil, but what about changing transmission fluid? The importance of proper transmission fluid lubrication and occasional transmission flush cannot be overlooked. Similar to engine oil your transmission is constantly creating friction and without lubrication, it will start to cause problems. Keep in mind that the transmission’s job is to provide engine power to the wheels. This means that transmission fluid, a magenta-colored liquid that coats gears and torque converters inside the transmission needs just as much attention as an engine’s oil. Sadly transmission fluid replacement is neglected by many, resulting in severe transmission problems and costly repairs. If your car has 80 to 100k miles we suggest you read the manufacturers suggested oil change intervals and get your fluid changed before its due.

WHY DOES MY TRANSMISSION FLUID NEED TO BE CHANGED?
Today, most cars have an automatic transmissions that run on automatic transmission fluid, or ATF for short. Pressure changes within the ATF cause the transmission to switch gears. This is also how gears change in manual transmissions . On a relatively simple drive from your house to the office, the transmission and the fluid do quite a bit of work. Fluid temperatures soar to 175 degrees Fahrenheit (79 degrees Celsius), which is perfectly normal for ATF. Should the fluid temperatures remain at 175 degrees Fahrenheit, ATF would mimic the Energizer Bunny and keep going and going for 100,000 miles or so.
Unfortunately, that temperature rarely stays in the optimal range. The oil can heat beyond acceptable limits often due to variable driving conditions, stop-and-go driving, hauling a heavy load, driving long distances or up and down mountains. The higher temperatures, ATF begins to break down, and your transmission begins to shift gears roughly, slowly or both.
HOW OFTEN SHOULD I CHANGE MY TRANSMISSION FLUID?
Most manufacturers recommend that you flush your transmission fluid and change the filter every 30,000 to 60,000 and others 80 to 100k. The frequency with which you should change your vehicle’s transmission fluid depend on the vehicle’s specific make, model, quality of transmission, and transmission fluid quality. If your transmission fluid level is low you should take it in for service right away. Give us a call today if you need help figuring out when your next change is due.
