Top Myths About Manual Transmissions Debunked

Automatic transmissions continue to be a popular choice, which has made manual transmissions less common today. Of course, some drivers still love the thrill they get when they drive a standard. While manual transmissions will probably always have a devoted following, many myths surround these transmissions. Here’s a look at some of the top myths about manual transmissions and the truths behind them that you need to know.

Myth #1 – Manual Transmissions Always Provide Better Fuel Efficiency

In the past, it was true that vehicles operating with a manual transmission were generally more fuel efficient than vehicles with an automatic transmission. Through the years however, automatic transmissions have seen many technological advancements, and the addition of more gears. This has led some automatic transmissions to offer even better fuel economy than their manual counterparts. One example is the Ford Focus, where the manual transmission gets 30mpg combined and the six-speed automatic gets 31mpg combined.

Myth #2 – You’ll Pay Less for a Car with a Manual Transmission

Another common myth is that you’ll pay less for a car that has a manual transmission. In some cases, you will pay a bit less for a vehicle with a manual. However, in today’s automobile industry, it is possible that you’ll pay the exact same price for either the automatic or the manual transmission version of a particular vehicle.  For example, manual BMWs are often the same in price as automatic BMWs. Certain GM vehicles cost the same for both transmission types as well.

Myth #3 – The Best Sports Cars Only Have Manual Transmissions

If you think you have to go with a fully manual transmission to get a great sports car, you’re wrong. Some popular sports cars, including the 2014 Porsche 911 and the 2014 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray, come with the option to have either an automatic or manual transmission installed. In fact, the 2014 911 GT3, considered one of the hottest Porsches out there, only comes with an automated manual transmission. Other top sports cars featuring automated manual transmissions include the 2013 Ferrari F12 Berlinetta, the 2014 Jaguar F-Type, and the 2013 Lamborghini Aventador.

Even some professional drivers will tell you that you aren’t losing any sports performance when you go with an automatic transmission, and there’s a reason why certain type performance car manufacturers just don’t offer traditional manual transmissions anymore.
